It's slightly further afield out towards Hexham but you could visit vindolanda the Roman Fort on Hadrian's wall. Entry to this will also get you entry to the Roman Army Museum which is a 10 minute drive up the road.

Hi, The fort is 15 mins walk from the beach, I found the easiest way was to walk up through the north park or up Lawe Road then cross Lawe Road onto Fort Road 150mtrs then left down Baring Road 100mtrs the fort entrance is on the right and is free entrance and there is a voluntary contribution bucket if you feel inclined to offer a gift. Enjoy.
