Get there at sunrise and you won’t have to pay anything. We drove through the entire park for free. We even spoke with one of the park rangers who told us as long as you’re there before 9 AM you don’t have to pay anything because they are not open yet. There was also hardly anyone there that early and we almost had the entire place to ourselves!

There are different hikes for different views. You can walk through lava flows from a great little park next to the highway. There is a nice walking path from the visitor center that’s a loop. The trail that goes up the hill to the overlook wasn’t that impressive and a bit of an easy hike. As you drive in you see massive lava flows. I was shocked on how large they really are. Go see it, there are probably much more you can do.
