We were fortunate enough to visit the weekend after the 80th anniversary, on our way back from a trip to Luxembourg. It was a bit of a whistle stop tour, and if it honest i came mostly for the battl… Full review by Becather

Turned up thinking this museum would be great due to the size and the history that surrounds it, how terribly wrong I was. To put it in to words it’s more made for school trips rather than history … Full review by paulbJ7709NK

What memorial as information about the 17th Airborne Division and specifically the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment (United States). My Uncle was a Chaplin for that unit.

If he fought in the battle his unit would be listed on the American memorial in Bastogne. As far as what each individual unit did I would look it up on the Internet. The memorial is at least 5 stories high in the shape of a star. The units are shown on the columns. White marble if I remember right. It was VERY impressive. Hope this helps.

We are planning on driving from Amsterdam to Bastogne, (about 200 miles) Is there a preferred or better route to take? Has anyone made the drive? Route E25 southbound and Route E19 to E411 to E46 northbound. We are planning on returning to Amsterdam several days later by driving back and stopping in Brussels. Any suggestions of which roads to take is appreciated. Patrk71

The quickest way is definitely to go from Amsterdam on the A2/E25 all the way to Maastricht which is close to Margraten American War Cemetery and Henri-Chapelle American War Cemetery (just across the border in Belgium), and after that continue on E25 all the way to Bastogne. Quickest way from Bastogne to Brussels seems to be A4/E411, from Brussels it would be A12/E19, A58, A27 (E311) and A2 (E35) to Amsterdam. If you have more time you could go to the Arnhem/Nijmegen area as well which is very well-known because of the Battle of Arnhem (A bridge too far), in Oosterbeek, close to Arnhem we have the Airborne Museum and Canadian Cemetery, in Groesbeek, close to Nijmegen we have the Liberation Museum with a Canadian Cemetery nearby and also a lot of historical monuments. Just across the border on the way to Kleve in Germany you can find a Commonwealth Cemetery in Reichswald and a German Cemetery in Donsbrueggen. Other option could be Liberty Park Overloon, halfway in between Nijmegen and Venlo, close to the German border, with lots of military vehicles. Travel time from Amsterdam to Arnhem and Nijmegen is 1 to 1,5 hours, Overloon would be a little further, It is a relatively small detour when driving to the south but if you have 1 or 2 days left it's really worth it. If you prefer a more historical town to visit on your way to Bastogne I would choose Den Bosch ('s Hertogenbosch) but Utrecht and Maastricht are really nice as well. Hope this helps you! Sorry that I don't know about the E-road numbers as we don't use them in Holland in daily life. What someone else already wrote, if you're interested in WWII take the time for the new Bastogne War Museum (half a day I would say), same thing for Liberation Museum Groesbeek and Liberty Park Overloon. (don't know about Airborne Museum Oosterbeek myself yet)

Hi Keith I am visiting Bastogne at the end of May as a surprise present for my husbands 40th. Neither of us have been to the area before and I am wondering if you could offer me any information on the area. We will only be there for 3 days so if you could recommend any tours, guides or general places to see I would really appreciate it. Also would I be right in thinking that we would be better off hiring a car? We will be flying into Charleroi airport in Belgium. Any kind of advise would be very much appreciated. Kind regards Edel

Hi Edel, lucky you, this is a wonderful area to visit, and yes you will need a car. But with only 3 days you have big choices to make. Do you want a variety of things to do or do you want to concentrate on WW11 commemoration. The Bastogne War Museum and US Mardasson Memorial is a must. The museum tells the story of 4 people from different backgrounds and is very well done. Loads of information online about this. In Bastogne itself is McAuliffe Square with a memorial to US General McAuliife, famous for his 'Nuts' retort to a German request. there is also a US tank and Liberty Marker 1145. The last Liberty Marker 1147 is at the War Museum. The December 44 Museum at La Gleize is another one and has the big German Tiger tank outside. We found this one well worth a visit. In La Roche en Ardenne the Ardennes Museum is well laid out and also worth a visit. La Roche itself is a lovely town to wander around and has a very nice Chinese restaurant on the river and a nice Parc de Rompre with interesting features.. The caves at Hotton make a nice relief from the War interests and on the way from La Roche you will pass the British Sherman tank Northampton from where you get a lovely view of the town. Just round the corner from there is the Memorial to the Scottish 51st Division (park at the Tank and walk to the memorial) Durbuy, reputed to be the smallest town in the world, is quaint and has a lovely Topiary Park. I hope this helps and you can find more information online about these places.
