We went there in August and maybe (I say maybe) it wasn't a great idea, since the place is very crowded and you lose a bit of the magic of the place. The parking lot is huge, but nevertheless we had …Full review by Flavio B

Is this something that can be done at the end of December?
A:
I'm not sure if it's open or not. One thing I know is that it is a hard and windy climb - in the winter with the snow it might not be so fun.

When we hiked up the mule path (chemin des muletiers) from the parking col de ceyssat - it took us about 30-45 minutes (we're used to hiking and wasn't bad). I would say if you hike at a leisurely pace it should take an hour. The views were definitely worth it. There is a longer more gradual trail called chemin des chèvres (2 hr hike). It consists of a lot of wooden steps. However, if you absolutely aren't used to hiking the train is probably a better option. (See below for tips & trail map) Tips: start in the morning when it is cooler & less crowded, take it slow & enjoy the gorgeous view!, wear comfortable sneakers, and bring plenty of water. The trail map can be found under carte des chemins at either site... volcan.puy-de-dome. fr panoramiquedesdomes. fr
Q:
How much is the train and are dogs allowed on it
A:
The train is 14€ if i remember correctly. I believe dogs are allowed but not 100% sure
