A election in Canada’s British Columbia province was too close to call on polling day, leaving the left-leaning New Democratic Party’s majority in doubt while support soared for a party that has not ruled the region since before World War II.

The incumbent left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP), in power for seven years, had won 40 seats and was leading in six while the right-leaning Conservative Party had won 40 and was leading in five. The Green Party had won two.

Predictions of a close election were holding true in British Columbia on Saturday, with early returns showing the New Democrats and the B.C. Conservatives neck and neck.

British Columbians have gone to the polls on an election day marked by torrential rain and high winds across much of the province.
