SAN JACINTO COUNTY, Texas — Dozens of homes on FM 1725 at FM 3081 in San Jacinto County were evacuated because of a hazmat spill Friday morning, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Saturday morning, residents were allowed to return home.

A truck crash in San Jacinto County caused a fatal accident for the driver and a sulfur dioxide leak, leading to road closures and a shelter-in-place order.

Emergency crews were continuing to work Friday to contain a sulfur dioxide spill after the driver of an 18-wheeler lost control of the truck and overturned in San Jacinto County, prompting evacuations.

A crash and hazmat spill has shut down FM 1725 in San Jacinto County. The San Jacinto Sheriff's Office says a chemical tanker truck carrying hazardous materials crashed and rolled over on FM 1725 near FM 3081 and SH 150. Authorities say traffic is closed within a mile of the crash, but Highway 150 remains open.

In an update on Saturday, DPS said its air monitoring had not detected anything hazardous. The shelter-in-place order has since been lifted, and residents can safely return home.
