The artificial intelligence tool uses the fourth iteration of Meta’s Llama model, which Meta has touted as being more cost-efficient than competitors like ChatGPT and Gemini.

Meta has released its first standalone AI app on the iPhone and iPad. Meta AI is built on Meta’s Llama 4 model and provides a dedicated interface for text and voice chat. There’s also a social feed for discovering new ways to use AI.

Llama API, which was unveiled during the company's first-ever AI developer conference, will help Meta go up against APIs offered by rival model makers including Microsoft -backed OpenAI, Alphabet's Google and emerging low-cost alternatives such as China's DeepSeek.
