A sports spectator has died after a university athlete threw a hammer out of bounds at a field and track event in Colorado, according to local media reports. The man died at the scene on Sunday morning after medics and emergency services were called to Colorado Springs’ athletics track at the University of Colorado.

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs, which hosted the event, said the implement had “cleared certified barriers.”

The fatal incident occurred at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse on the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs campus around 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
