Jan Holden was born Valerie Jeanne Wilkinson in Southport, Lancashire, in 1931, but began her schooling in India, where her father worked at the Swadeshi cotton mills in Cawnpore.

Jan Holden's life was not without difficulty or tragedy. In the early 1960s her beloved twin brother drowned, and in 1973 her marriage broke down, leaving her to bring up three teenage children.
