Leopard Seals are among the most difficult top predators to study due to the combination of the extreme climate in Antarctica, the species’ solitary habits and their lethal reputation.

Antarctic leopard seals prey on penguins and fur seals, which feed on shrimp-like crustaceans called krill. Scientists monitor the seals as useful barometers of the health of the Antarctic ecosystem.
