Ball Lightning Imagine seeing a glowing sphere floating through the sky during a thunderstorm. That's ball lightning, a mysterious and rare weather phenomenon that has puzzled scientists for years.

Instead, the red dots are the result of an extremely rare weather event called "red sprites," while the much larger blue orbs are lightning strikes — a marvelous show put on by Mother Nature.
