The coil, essentially a transformer, consists of primary and secondary windings. An ignition's breaker points are part of the "primary" coil circuit. That circuit operates on battery voltage--or less.
An ignition circuit is made up of two sub-circuits: the primary, which carries low voltage; and the secondary, which carries high voltage. The primary circuit is controlled by the ignition key.
