VATICAN CITY — St. Gregory of Narek — a 10th-century priest, monk, mystic and poet beloved among Armenian Christians — has become the first Armenian to be named a doctor of the Church.

Nearly 600 people gathered atop a small hill in South Whittier on Saturday, Sept. 17, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and Parish.

St. Gregory Armenian Church was built in 1934 and has been an active church since then. The first building was a modest structure that was expanded in 1957.
