Construction began Monday for a $200,000 renovation project at the DMV office in Merced, an upgrade that will shut the agency’s doors for the next seven weeks.

Department of Motor Vehicles officials on Monday announced a seven-week closure of the Merced DMV office, due to scheduled renovations on the nearly 40-year-old 1313 W. 12th St. building.

According to the DMV’s Office of Public Affairs, the agency will also hire between 800 and 1,000 new staff members statewide to help with the high volume of license applicants.
