Background A 40-year-old man presented with acute chest and back pain, hypertension and anuria. Two years previously he had been diagnosed with acute uncomplicated type B aortic dissection.

We examined 201 patients with type B acute aortic dissection who were enrolled in the International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissection between 1996 and 2003 and who survived to hospital discharge.

A Type A dissection means the tear involves your ascending aorta, regardless of where the initial tear occurred. Type B. Dissections that start in the descending aorta are considered type B.
