Jalan Besar is a low-lying area that experienced flooding from the 2000s to 2010s. The last time it experienced a flooding incident was on Nov 13, 2014, said PUB.

The fully automated facility in Jalan Besar is an alternative solution to deal with floods, without the need to carry out redevelopment works in an area with many heritage buildings.
