Valentine’s Day began as St. Valentine’s Day, a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus.  February 14th first became associated with romantic love during the High Middle Ages as the tradition of courtly love was then flourishing.

Nowadays, heart-shaped boxes full of chocolate and candy are ubiquitous, but how did they become such a staple of Valentine's Day in the first place?

Valentine's Day means tiny cards traded among schoolchildren and romantic dinners. It also means heart-shaped food. Of course, it's perfectly reasonable to eat food in its normal shapes, even if you're in love.
