Hit and run crashes killed 52 pedestrians in Sarasota and Manatee Counties over the past two years, according to statistics.

That stretch of 4th Street is just northeast of the Fruitville Road and Tamiami Trail roundabout; along it is the Chabad of Downtown SRQ and the 4thByTheBay Sarasota condominiums.

Officials say the road closure will stay in effect until further notice.
