At least 17 people have died, and eight remain missing, after torrential rains triggered flash floods and landslides across Indonesia's Java island. Flash floods and landslides during Indonesia's rainy season frequently lead to devastating loss of life and infrastructure damage.

Indonesian rescuers resumed a search Wednesday for people missing after flash floods and landslides on Indonesia’s main island of Java that killed at least 17 people.

In December, 10 people were killed in flash floods that hit hilly villages on the country’s main island of Java. In the previous month, flash floods and landslides in North Sumatra province killed at least 29 people.
