Reports started to emerge on outage-tracking site DownDetector and across social media at around 4am PT/ 7am ET/ 12pm GMT with no official word from parent company OpenAI on what the cause is.

Downdetector, which tracks website outages, showed more than 10,000 people reported the AI chatbot, which is made by OpenAI, was not working in the UK on Thursday. Users attempting to use it were met with a message reading "the web server reported a bad gateway error".

The website Downdetector showed reports of the ChatGPT outage start shortly after 6 a.m. and continue to rise Thursday morning.

ChatGPT launched in the fall of 2022 and quickly became the fastest-growing consumer software. The base version is free, but some users pay as much as $200 a month for the service. Around 300 million people use OpenAI's chatbot every week, and the chatbot handles more than 1 billion messages a day.

Multiple users reported issues with OpenAI on Thursday morning, according to Downdetector. By 6:45 a.m. more than 4,000 people reported issues with the service to Downdetector, more than 90% of which indicated problems with ChatGPT.

Microsoft is down across the US as user report issues with 365 services. Users cited problems with the websites, Outlook and logging into accounts.
