The man fatally shot by Gary police during a standoff on Wednesday has been identified, and his death was ruled a homicide.

"He was observed approaching the front door several times with a gun in one hand and a baby in the other," the sheriff said.

Police said the boy was not hurt. Before he was killed by police, the suspect shot a 35-year-old male relative.
