Most coyotes in Ohio are gray, though some show a rusty, brown, or off-white coloration. While people and wildlife can peacefully coexist, sometimes it can be a nuisance and conflict can arise.

The collared coyotes provide us with data that we can use to make inferences about how Ohio's coyote population naturally behaves, how long a coyote typically lives in Ohio, and what the sources of mortality are.

Understand that coyotes are common throughout Ohio's 88 counties in both rural and urban settings. There are no wild wolves living in Ohio. Identify that the canine is truly a coyote and not a stray dog. If you determine the animal is a stray dog, contact your county dog warden.

We collected data from coyotes all over Ohio, mainly from roadkill and from legally harvested animals. These samples are used to assess coyote diet, population dynamics, and impacts on local livestock.

Since coyotes are relatively new to Ohio, only becoming common across the state in the last 50 years, there has been little research on their population dynamics in this area. Mature coyotes form a mated pair, and that pair will remain together until one or both of them dies.
