The National Practice database includes the manuals, legislation, case law and other national practice collected by ICRC delegations, National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and other partners around the world as part of the mandate bestowed upon the ICRC by the 26th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

Our story is the story of humanitarian action, the Geneva Conventions and the birth of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Since 1863, the ICRC’s sole objective has been to ensure protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and strife.

We respond rapidly and efficiently to provide humanitarian protection and assistance to those suffering the devastating effects of armed conflict. We also respond to disasters in conflict zones, because the consequences of a disaster are compounded if a country is already at war.

Archives 1914-1918: during the First World War, 10 million people, servicemen or civilians, were captured and sent to detention camps. The belligerent countries involved provided lists of prisoners to the ICRC, which created an index card for each prisoner and detainee.

The emblems of the red cross, red crescent, or red crystal can be used for two different purposes. First, the emblem can be used to show that certain people or objects are protected as medical personnel or facilities under IHL ( protective use ).

The present table seeks to provide the war crimes over which the International Criminal Court (ICC) has jurisdiction, togetherwith the definition of such offences as found in other sources ofinternational humanitarian law (IHL).

The red cross, red crescent and red crystal emblems provide protection for military medical services and relief workers in armed conflicts. National Societies in each country also use the emblems for identification purposes.

Nov 26, 2018 · The ICRC strove to assist the civilian populations affected by the war, including millions of refugees and evacuees, and collaborated to this end with the League of Red Cross Societies and the different National Societies of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

We work from seven sites - Lviv, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odesa, Luhansk and Donetsk - alongside our partners in the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, to save lives and alleviate the suffering of civilians.
