The Sámi flag is the flag of Sápmi and the Sámi people, one of the Indigenous people groups of the Nordic countries and the Kola Peninsula of the Russian Federation.

The Sámi flag was first used in 1986 but not approved as an official flag until 15 August 1992. It is used by the Sámi of the Lapland region, which covers parts of northern Sweden, Norway and Finland as well as a small part of Russia.

The Sami flag represents the Sami people and refers to Nature and the natural world. It was designed by artist Astrid Båhl and was adopted by the Nordic Sami Conference on August 16,1986, during the Sami cultural awakening in Sápmi.

The question of a adopting a flag surfaced with the increased activism among the Sami in the 1970s. The idea of having a flag was first regarded as too radical by many. These people associated the idea with demands for separatism and the establishment of a Sami state.

The Sami people of all nationalities share the same flag. It was adopted by the Sami Council’s 13th Conference in Åre in 1986. Our flag was designed by Astrid Båhl from Skibotn, Norway. The circle symbolizes both the sun and the moon. The sun is red, the moon is blue and the combined other colours are adopted from the traditional Sami costume.
