Pituophis melanoleucus, commonly known as the eastern pine snake, is a species of nonvenomous snake in the family Colubridae. The species is endemic to the eastern United States. Three subspecies are currently recognized as being valid.

Northern pine snakes are large, heavy-bodied snakes with a white, tan or yellowish background color and dark brown or black markings that begin as heavy mottling on the head and gradually become distinct blotches toward the tail.

The Northern Pine Snake is a long (48”-100”) snake with a slightly pointed snout. Ground color is white, gray, or cream, marked with black or dark brown blotches. The blotches are less distinct at the front half of the snake, and become more clearly delineated towards the tail end.

The northern pinesnake (Pituophis melanoleucus melanoleucus) is a large, stout-bodied, non-venomous snake. Adult size ranges from 48 to 66 inches (122–168 cm) long. The largest specimen is nearly 7 feet. In Virginia, maximum known length is 65 inches (167.8 cm).

Only the Northern Pinesnake (P. m. melanoleucus) occurs in Virginia. Description: A large, stout-bodied snake reaching a maximum total length of 2,108 mm (83.0 inches) (Conant and Collins, 1991). In Virginia, maximum known snout-vent length (SVL) is 1,495 mm (58.9 inches) and maximum total length is 1,678 mm (66.1 inches).

Northern pine snakes can be recognized by their relatively small, pointed heads and the presence of four prefrontal scales, which are scales between the eyes above the nostrils. On the underside, these snakes have mostly white coloration with irregular square-shaped black blotches.
