On March 9, the Coptic Orthodox Church remembers the departure of the Great Pope (Papa, Ava) Kyrillos (Cyril) VI, the 116th Pope of Alexandria and successor of Saint Mark the Evangelist. He sat on the throne of Saint Mark for twelve years (1959-1971).

Pope Cyril VI of Alexandria also called Abba Kyrillos VI, Coptic: Ⲡⲁⲡⲁ Ⲁⲃⲃⲁ Ⲕⲩⲣⲓⲗⲗⲟⲥ ⲋ̅ ; (2 August 1902 – 9 March 1971; 26 Epip 1618 – 30 Meshir 1687) was the 116th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark from 10 May 1959 (2 Pashons 1675) to his death.

Long before becoming patriarch, Kyrillos had approached Pope Yu’annis XIX with the (denied) request to revive the pilgrimage site of the saint that around the tenth century A.D. had fallen into ruins.

Pope Kyrillos VI is among the most beloved of the Coptic saints, and is a true blessing to our generation. He was born on August 2, 1902 and was called Azer Ata. At the age of 25, he resigned his job and entered the Monastery of El-Baramous.

Pope Kyrillos 6th died on 9 March 1971, after a short illness. His funeral was held in the Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Abbasseya. He was buried in a temporary tomb under the altar of the cathedral.

The priest of our church, Fr. Timotheus Soliman, was ordained on Novemeber 18, 2001.

Pope Paul VI became the first pope to visit six continents. He was also the first pontiff to travel on an airplane, visit the Holy Land on pilgrimage, and travel outside Italy in a century. He travelled more widely than any of his predecessors, earning the nickname "the Pilgrim Pope".
