In 1983, following the reunification of the "southern" Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS) and the "northern" United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A (UPCUSA), a committee was appointed to design a new seal and symbol for the newly reunified denomination.

The seal of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is a symbolic statement of the church's heritage, identity, and mission in contemporary form. Its power depends on both its simplicity and complexity, as well as its traditional and enduring qualities.

But just what is the seal? It’s a registered trademark of the Presbyterian Church USA, comprising four symbolic elements: the cross, scripture, a dove, and flames. The seal was adopted in 1985 and was designed by Malcolm Grear and Associates. The primary focus is the cross.

Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with the French lawyer John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him.

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has over 2.2 million members, more than 10,000 congregations, and roughly 14,000 ordained and active ministers. Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation.
