The ALCO PA was a family of A1A-A1A diesel locomotives built to haul passenger trains. The locomotives were built in Schenectady, New York, in the United States, by a partnership of the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and General Electric (GE) between June, 1946 and December, 1953.

Aug 23, 2024 · Today, Doyle McCormack has successful restored former Santa Fe PA-1 #62-L into Nickel Plate Road #190. The locomotive he lovingly brought back to life has since been sold (March, 2023) to Genesee Valley Transportation of Pennsylvania, which plans to use the locomotive in excursion service.

May 28, 2019 · The Alco PA-1 diesel locomotives, particularly those used on Santa Fe, enjoy a very loyal following. The Museum of the American Railroad is proud to be the steward of one of a handful still in existence - and the only unit to be restored to its original Santa Fe appearance.

The three new Santa Fe units of #51L, A, B were turned over to the New York Central for movement to Chicago on September 25, 1946. According to Early Diesel Daze by John McCall the Santa Fe did not receive these units until October 1946.

Obtained from the Santa Fe in December of 1967 and painted in a blue version of the Santa Fe’s "Warbonnet" scheme, the four famous ALCo PA-1s were used to upgrade the power on passenger trains between Albany and Montreal.

The Albany & Eastern local departs Burlington Northern Santa Fe's Albany Yard for the 2-mile trip to the Willamette & Pacific yard. The power for this day's local is ex-Southern Pacific GP9E #3859, only slightly younger than its important cargo.
