Memories of Sunderland: Seaburn Fair, what happened to it?
In the late 1940s the Seaburn fair, also known as “Ocean World” (with its adjacent zoo) opened up. One of its most famous early attractions included the Big Dipper rollercoaster, which similar to that of Blackpool, opened in 1955 and lasted until 1967.

Apr 14, 2017 · As we reported, the Big Dipper was no longer part of the fairground. The boating lake and miniature railway were also closed and the kiosks removed. To many people’s surprise the Seaburn Hall was demolished and a supermarket was opened on the site with the neighbouring lawns having a leisure centre and the Pullman Lodge built on them.

The Seaburn Fun Park, now a carpark next to the Leisure World arcade, was a Seaside fair ground which closed a few years ago. Its multicoloured sign was an icon of the seafront. However, with the park having stood empty for years it became a divisive landmark amongst residents who both mourned its passing or called for its removal.
History of Turners Funfairs – North East Funfairs
The Turner family were the Operators and Managers of the fairground at Seaburn on the North East coast. Keith Turners father, Walker Turner, was responsible for the building of the big dipper at Seaburn, which opened in 1955, and was renowned for his skills in this field.
