A viewport, or viewing port, or simply window, was a type of transparency used to see through a wall so as to view the outside of a starship or building. In nautical terms, porthole was specifically applied to ships.

Feb 19, 2019 · In Star Trek Generations there's at least one scene that shows the windows breaking while the saucer section is crash landing. There's also exterior shots of dirt and debris sliding off the windows, and you can see they are covered in dirt.

Jul 3, 2014 · It's not obvious that you "should" see the saucer section sloping down away from below the bottom of the window, at least not unless you are standing at the window and aiming your eyes (or camera) at a downward angle.

Beginning with the 2009 Star Trek film, the traditional viewscreen was phased out in favor of a large window (or set of windows) with a digital overlay. This type of viewscreen has been featured on every Starfleet vessel appearing on screen since then, including being retconned onto the original USS Enterprise .

Sep 25, 2017 · In the Next Generation the ship has nice big windows in places like the captain's quarters and Troi's and Riker's quarters. But what about the windows that are on the underside of the ship? Does the gravity change on those decks so that the windows are still in the same place in relation to the room as shown in the above mentioned places?

Jun 25, 2013 · Watching the remastered TOS for the first time and I've noticed that there is a complete lack of windows on the ship. There are definitely windows in ENT and TNG. Clearly there are production reasons for this but has anyone thought of an in universe explanation?

Star Trek: Lower Decks just ended that bridge window versus viewscreen debate in its season 2 finale episode, “First First Contact”. In the episode the USS Cerritos is forced to power down everything on the ship.

Nov 30, 2022 · Based on watching a random selection of TNG episodes (Deja Q, A Matter of Perspective, Tin Man, Best of Both Worlds Pt I), the answer is that the viewscreen generally shows an un-zoomed view out of the main window, a flat starfield if they're sublight and a moving starfield if they're at warp.
