McQueen's mother married, and when the boy was eight, she brought him from the farm to live with her and her new husband in Indianapolis. His great-uncle Claude gave McQueen a special gift at his departure.

McQueen was born in Beech Grove, Indiana, a suburban community bordering Indianapolis, in Marion County. His father, William, a stunt pilot for a barnstorming flying circus, abandoned McQueen and his mother when McQueen was six months old. His mother, Julia, was a young, rebellious alcoholic.

McQueen was mostly raised by his maternal grandparents and his uncle Claude at the latter’s farm in Missouri, as his mother was an alcoholic and prostitute and couldn’t care for young McQueen. He was raised as a Catholic.
