The South Canyon Fire was a 1994 wildfire that took the lives of 14 wildland firefighters on Storm King Mountain, near Glenwood Springs, Colorado, on July 6, 1994. It is often also referred to as the "Storm King" fire.

Jul 6, 1994 · The South Canyon Fire was ignited by lightning on July 2, 1994, and reported to the BLM on July 3. By July 6, firefighters from multiple modules were engaged on the fire, including smokejumpers, the Prineville Hotshots, helitack, and others.

Jul 11, 2024 · This weekend marked the 30th anniversary of the South Canyon Fire on Storm King Mountain in Glenwood Springs. 14 wildland firefighters died while battling the fire, which lasted from July 4 to July 6, 1994.

Lightning ignited the South Canyon Fire on the afternoon of July 2, 1994. For the next 48 hours, the fire burned downslope in the leaves, twigs, and cured grasses covering the ground surface. By 1200 on July 4 the fire had burned approximately 3 acres.
