Accipitridae is a family of birds of prey which includes hawks, eagles, kites, harriers, and Old World vultures. These birds have powerful hooked beaks for tearing flesh from their prey, strong legs, powerful talons, and keen eyesight.

Named after its white lower back, this is one of the most widespread large vultures in Africa. It has a strong, hooked beak - perfectly adapted for a diet scavenging the carcasses of large animals.

Southern Tanzania is a population stronghold for several Critically endangered vultures - most notably White-backed, Hooded, and White-headed vultures – when compared with other well studied sites e.g. Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. We began tagging vultures in 2015 and as of December 2020 have tagged 51 vultures in southern Tanzania.
