Unfortunately I think I'll have to go entirely to the outside corner of the wall because the shower curb goes that far and I want to make sure the shower door will have ample room to be installed without having to deal with the outer edge of the tile being right in the middle of the door installation. Here is a picture of the wall and curb.

This should not be that difficult. Pack in thinset, lay on the tape, and flat-knife to get it set in. In the corners, use a corner knife. If you just want to leave the corners untreated that will probably be fine, because that seam won't split the center of a tile.

Nov 23, 2014 · I had a similar situation where the backer board extended a few inches past my planned tiling edge in my shower. After I had finished with the tile, I taped the joint and applied joint compound over the backer board and it seems great. It's been three years and there is no cracking or any problem with it.

Do yourself a favor and get this all torn out now, all the rotting wood replaced, and a shower installed properly. No amount of patching or caulking will make this right. –

Looking closer there is a visible crack in the grout in one corner and it feels soft and like I could pull a small chunk of grout out from the other corner.

Nov 25, 2013 · The exterior corner of the shower curb is leaking a small bit of water after every shower. Over time it has corroded the paint and molding that butts up to the tiled curb. The leak is through the grout. No water exits on top of the curb. The shower enclosure is caulked with 100% silicone in the places specified by the installation instructions.

Mar 27, 2018 · I would not use acetone because a spill (which is very likely) could (would?) damage the fiberglass shower pan. If you feel it necessary to use a solvent, use rubbing alcohol, and be sparing with that. I doubt a solvent is necessary at all. Note that the shower pans have a lip behind the tile so water is almost certainly NOT leaking into the wall.
