I recently buyed the Universal Waite after 3 years of tarot experience as my first Rider Waite deck. I learned with untraditional decks like the Sacred Circle. Suddenly it grabbed me and I wanted to study the roots of Tarot so I bought the Universal Waite (never liked the RW coloring) and the Fournier Marseille.

I have the 1990 version and the paleness of the colors is what has always put me off this deck. I wonder what the pocket version is like as the various versions of the U.S. Games Rider Waite seem to differ in subtle ways. With a deeper saturation of colors, I'd be much more inclined to use the Universal on a regular basis as a reading deck.

I DO love the Pamela Colman Smith Commemorative. That is MY deck. With that said, I also really like the Universal Waite. It does have a different mood because of the coloring and some changes, but I think some querents find it soothing, appealing. I was lucky enough to get an old Belgian printed one with FABULOUS card stock, which helps too.

The Universal Waite was my first deck, and honestly, even back then, I rarely used the book much. I tried to do it intuitively most of the time, and just go by what the images "said to me". I think that's why, still to this day, many of my readings deviate from what a more "traditional" (whatever that means) reader would give you.
