Zeus (/ zjuːs /, Ancient Greek: Ζεύς) [a] is the sky and thunder god in ancient Greek religion and mythology, who rules as king of the gods on Mount Olympus. Zeus is the child of Cronus and Rhea, the youngest of his siblings to be born, though sometimes reckoned the eldest as the others required disgorging from Cronus's stomach.

The greatest threat to Mount Olympus came from Typhon the gigantic monster whose head touched the sky. All of the major gods, bar Zeus, fled Mount Olympus, in the face of the monstrous Typhon, but even Zeus struggled to stand fast against the giant.

In Greek mythology Mount Olympus was the home of the gods who dwelt in fabulous palaces of marble and gold. Olympus is clearly described in Homer's Iliad. It was essentially an ancient acropolis--a fortified hill-top and palace complex--located just below the peaks of Mount Olympus.

Located on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia and standing with its highest peak Mytikas at almost 10,000 feet (2,918 m), Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece and one of its most picturesque sites.
