Every AI system builds upon several key low-level systems. The Last of Us uses triangulated navmeshes, which are a fairly straightforward approach to navigation. The navmeshes are fairly coarse, and so we have a second-pass system that uses a 2D grid centered around every character on which are rasterized all static and dynamic blockers.
