Check for subframe cracks when buying a car and reinforce it once you get the car. After that, coilovers, welded diff, bucket seat, in-line hydro.

E46's are old window regulators will go out, bushings are probably worn, and all the other small old car things will add up. The difference is that with a BMW if you let the maintenance slip you can cause a lot more damage.

And companies like BMW take samples and measure if they are made to spec, meet certain requirements, or are too close to one end of a given spectrum.
