The Black Toad is ONLY found in a small portion of California! It lives only in marsh grasses formed by spring water, with dry surrounding areas. It is a highly aquatic toad, preferring to spend most of its time in the spring-fed pools in its habitat.

The Black Toad occurs only in Deep Springs Valley southeast of Bishop near the Nevada Border. It occurs with the Great Basin Spadefoot, but is entirely different in appearance, being dark black with a stripe down the middle of the back.

More aquatic than most toads, Black Toads spend most of their time in shallow marshy areas, but they can also be found on dry, sandy soil around springs, foraging among grassy tussocks.
