Emo Verkerk (Amsterdam, 29 april 1955) is een Nederlands beeldend kunstenaar. Emo Verkerk studeerde filosofie aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (1974-1976) en deed vervolgens een kunstopleiding aan Ateliers '63 (1978-1980), waar hij onder anderen les kreeg van Ger van Elk.

Jun 12, 2021 · Luhring Augustine is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new paintings by the Dutch artist Emo Verkerk. The presentation, organized by the art historian and curator Karel Schampers, marks Verkerk’s first solo show with the gallery and his first in New York since 1982.

Emo Verkerk was born in 1955 in Amsterdam and studied at Ateliers ’63 in Haarlem. He has exhibited extensively both nationally as internationally, and his work is included in many important public and private Dutch collections.

This winter the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag is exhibiting around 90 of Emo Verkerk’s paintings and sculptures. Among the most important artists working in the Netherlands in recent years, Verkerk began producing his weird and wonderful two- and three-dimensional works in 1978.

This introduction to the English master marked a turning point: Verkerk decided to create a form of painting he likes to describe as ‘philosophy in practice’.

Emo Verkerk is one of the best and most versatile draughtsmen in the Netherlands. His 2009 exhibition De 100 mooiste tekeningen (The 100 Most Beautiful Drawings) in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague left no doubt about it.

Emo Verkerk is a contemporary artist known for his portraits of distinguished figures. He does not paint in a traditional sense, but rather translates his personal vision into a unique interpretation of the subject.
