4wd manual engaging hubs - General Discussion - Car Talk …
Dec 11, 2021 · Hey there, I have a 1991 Toyota Truck, 22re. To engage the 4wd on it, it has the hubs you have to get out and manually change on the front tires. Someone told me, if I need to change in an out of 2H and 4H more than a couple times a day, that I can leave the hubs on ‘lock’ between the two. So in theory, I can leave the tires set up for 4WD, but if I need to change in and out, I can just ...
2005 Silverado 4WD issue - Maintenance/Repairs - Car Talk …
Dec 13, 2016 · 2005 Chevy Silverado LS 5.3FF AT w/ manual 4WD: shifting into 4WD is smooth, but transfer case seems to whine and when you shift back to 2WD it shifts smooth but seems like the transfer case doesn’t disengage right away. When it does there is a clunk/bump. Thoughts? Also, I don’t use 4WD much, just in the winter when the roads are slick and the 400lbs of sand in the back of the truck don ...
Auto 4 wheel drive - General Discussion - Car Talk Community
Jan 8, 2009 · The “AUTO” setting will cause it to automatically engage the 4wd when it detects slippery conditions. The other settings are basically manual overrides for if you’re on a consistently slippery condition like driving on a completely snow-covered road and you don’t want it constantly cycling between 4wd and 2wd.
Using 4 wheel drive with Locking front Wheel Hubs
Feb 11, 2008 · I have recently purchased a 2000 Toyota Tacoma pick up truck with 4 wheel drive. This is my first experience with a 4x4, and want some advice on its use. This truck has the front wheel hubs that you have to lock, and an extra shifter that you shift into 4 wheel drive at up to 25 mph. I drive about 45 miles to work every day, mostly on country roads. This means that I need to make the decision ...
Engaging 4WD in older Chevy Pickup - Car Talk Community
Jan 1, 2010 · Maybe the manual is in the dash, we have a few gmc vehicles of that era and have always engaged 4wd before moving, 4wd should be used cautiously and sparingly imho. 4 lo you will not need unless pulling a boat out of a sandy launch etc. In fact I would skip using 4wd except when absolutely necessary and never over 40 mph.
2007 Toyota RAV4 4WD Dropout - Car Talk Community
Feb 4, 2008 · We bought a 2007 RAV a few months ago and absolutely love it, but winter weather has turned up a serious problem. The 4WD works great until you reach 25 MPH, where it drops out. The manual says it does this so Toyota knows about it. Apparently this is to protect the transfer case from damage on dry roads, but it is a big problem for us. Here in Flagstaff, AZ we drive on snowpack this time of ...

2006 Silverado 4WD Transfer case shifting issues
Nov 13, 2013 · 80K miles on this truck. pushbutton 4wd controls. Operates normally in Auto 4wd, 4Hi, and 4Lo, and 4wd functions as it should. By that I mean that the front wheel driveline is engaged in 4Hi & 4Lo, and engages under hard acceleration or rear-wheel slip in 4wd Auto. Here’s the problem: when I push the 2Hi button, it shifts into 2wd as it should whether moving or stationary. However, when I ...
2019 Buick Encore: "Service All Wheel Drive System" message, …
Jan 5, 2025 · Recently, the “Service All Wheel Drive System” has been coming on at startup. I can dismiss it, and it doesn’t come on while driving. There are no apparent symptoms. Car has 42,000 miles on it. Anyone have any advice? One supposed cause of this message is a failing battery, which I suppose is possible. The battery is the original. What I am not seeing on the Interwebs is whether a memory ...
2008 Dodge Ram 1500 - 4X4 not working - Car Talk Community
Dec 11, 2023 · My Ford 4WD truck uses manual hub actuators. That means I have to get out of the truck and rotate a little plastic knob to get them into the 4WD position which allows the front driveshaft to power the front wheels. Yours is a more convenient configuration. You don’t have to get out of your truck. But there’s a price to pay for the ...
