Situated in extreme Northeast Thailand, known as Isan, Nakhon Phanom is adjacent to the central Laotion town of Thakhet which means "foreigner crossing" in Lao. Nakhon Phanom "The City of Hills" was affectionately known as "Naked Fanny" or NKP by the Americans and refered to as the "End of the line at the edge of the world."

Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base (NKP) was just 75 miles from North Vietnam, somewhat north of Vietnam’s De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) at the 17th parallel, and a straight 230-mile flight from downtown Hanoi. It was within range of known weapons at communist positions in Laos, but sapper attacks were judged to be its greatest threat.

NKP was a Top Secret camp from which numerous special operations were run and from which the "CIA's secret war in Laos" (as today's history books refer to it) was run. Pathet Lao insurgents regularly blew up flight facilities equipment and sappers harassed and hit the camp.
