Jun 1, 2023 · This taonga is sacred to Hine-Pū-Te-Hue, an atua or deity of peace. When swung, these gourd-based poi produce a variety of calming sounds that emulate birds such as the kererū or native wood pigeon with calls ranging from chattering to whistling.

As a skill toy, poi is an object or theatrical prop used for dexterity play or an object manipulation. As a performance art, poi involves swinging tethered weights through a variety of rhythmical and geometric patterns. Poi artists may also sing or dance while swinging their poi.

A Poi Atua exhibition has been created by kaimahi of Tūwharetoa ki Kawerau Hauora currently being showcased in Whakatāne. Over the past year, they have developed its Te Kura Maengenge to provide wānanga to help heal our people through identity and mātauranga Māori.

These poi are designed to suit our Kōhanga Reo aged mokopuna, they are inspired by the diverse atua within Te Ao Māori. They have been hand-crafted to honor our Atua, ensuring their continued presence and influence through our dedicated efforts.

Poi Atua were used by tohunga (experts) during karakia (prayers) to help connect the spiritual and physical worlds, and clear away negative energies. Poi Atua is practised as a way to reconnect with Te Ao Māori, and as an alternative healing intervention.
