The Elder Futhark (named after the initial phoneme of the first six rune names: F, U, Þ, A, R and K) has 24 runes, often arranged in three groups of eight runes; each group is in modern times called an ætt [2] (pl. ættir; meaning 'clan, group', although sometimes thought to mean eight). What the groups were originally called remains unknown.

This sound was written in the Younger Futhark using the Yr rune ᛦ, the Algiz rune turned upside down, from about the 7th century. This phoneme eventually became indistinguishable from the regular r sound in the later stages of Old Norse, at about the 11th or 12th century.

YR refers to the letter Y as well as the letter R, and represents the inversion of the Man -Rune. The Rune means error, confusion, reversal, negation, destruction, fall, but also woman (as an opposite to man) as well as matter, evil, etc.
