I've watched all the anime that's currently out and read the official wiki but in all of those the other characters refer to Grell as a man. Where exactly does it say that she's a trans woman? EDIT: I totally accept this now, as several posters explained it super well.

Mar 11, 2020 · The term "male woman" has been a pejorative slang phrase for at least 20 years. You are correct that sex and gender are different, but the current terminology (also available via Stanford U) would be transgender woman or trans woman for manga only depictions of Grell.

During the Jack the Ripper Arc, Sebastian did refer to Grell by Mr. Grell in English, but only because the ‘san’ in Grell-san (by which Sebas addresses Grell) cannot be translated into English in a gender neutral way. And at the time, Grell was indeed posing as a male butler.

Grell Sutcliff is a major antagonist in the manga and anime Black Butler / Kuroshitsuji. She appears as the main antagonist in the Jack the Ripper Arc. Later in the series, Grell returns as a supporting anti-heroic character and occasional allies with to Ciel and Sebastian. She was voiced by Jun Fukuyama in Japanese and Daniel Fredrick in English.

Jun 2, 2015 · It's exactly as Grell said: she's a lady. Gender =/= sex. Grell has all the male parts, but his gender is feminine, and therefore, he is female.
