Intumescent: What and How?

This is no ordinary paint! Intumescent paint is designed to react chemically when heated, forming a protective foam that thermally insulates the surface underneath from the effects of the flame. And this is really important in steel constructed buildings, as once steel beams weaken drastically once they are heated beyond 350 C.
